Top Ten Interview Tips
- Research the organisation and the job for which you are being interviewed - consider the type of person required in terms of skills, strengths and experience required.
Know Yourself - consider your own capabilities and be prepared to promote ‘your' expertise and what you personally can offer to the potential employer -relate to this job.
Personal Dress - consider the expectations of the interviewer and dress appropriately and neatly, paying attention to accessories and grooming.
Be Punctual - always arrive on time so check your directions in advance and allow plenty of time.
Create a Confident Impression - make sure that first impression is a positive one with a pleasant smile, good eye contact, firm handshake, open body language, strong posture, confident voice quality and friendly greeting using the interviewers name if you know it.
Build and Maintain Rapport - show how interested and enthusiastic you are throughout the whole interview - maintain all the points above continuously so that your impression is a positive and memorable one. This really enhances a positive attitude.
Take Cues from the Interviewer - Whilst you want to project yourself positively, allow your interviewer to lead the way when inviting you to speak and answer questions. Use your judgement before interrupting.
Listen ‘Actively' - really listen to the information given and questions asked by the interviewer. You can glean so much information from listening about the job itself and the strengths being looked for in a candidate. Not listening attentively is a sign of boredom or being disinterested.
Answer Questions Effectively - consider in advance some of the questions you are likely to be asked so that you can confidently answer promoting your relevant skills. If you are unsure of an answer be honest - but show your willingness and enthusiasm to learn. You could also prepare a few questions in advance to ask when invited to do so - make sure the information has not already been provided.
Be Yourself, Relax and Enjoy! - most importantly, be natural and honest. Your enthusiasm and attitude say more about you than anything else.
